Indications and dosage of Abiraterone acetate

Indication: Abiraterone acetate in combination with the prednisone is recommended for treating patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who have taken prior chemotherapy containing the docetaxel.  

Recommended Dosage: The recommended dose of abiraterone acetate is 1,000 mg should be administered orally once daily in combination with prednisone 5 mg administered orally twice daily. The drug should be consumed only on an empty stomach. Meals shouldn’t be eaten for at least a couple of hours in prior to pomalidomide dose and for at least an hour after the dose of zytiga is taken. The tablets must be gulped whole with the water. 

How should I take Abiraterone:    

• Take this drug and prednisone exactly as your healthcare provider tells you.
• Your healthcare professional may change the dose if required.
• Do not interrupt consuming your prescribed dose of abiraterone acetate 250 mg or prednisone without discussing it with your healthcare professional first.
• Take this medicine on an empty stomach. Do not consume it with food. Consuming with food may cause more of the medicine to be absorbed by the body than is needed and this may cause side effects.
• No food should be eaten 2 hours prior and 1 hour after taking this drug.
• Swallow abiraterone 250 mg tablets whole. Consume it with the water.
• Men who are sexually active with a pregnant woman must use a condom during and for one week after treatment with this medication. If their sexual partner may become pregnant, a condom and another form of birth control must be used during and for one week after treatment with abiraterone 250 mg. Discuss with your doctor if you have any query about birth control.
• If you forget to take a dose of abiraterone or prednisone, take your dose the following day. If you forget to take  more than one dose, tell your doctor or healthcare provider as soon as possible.
• Your healthcare professional will do your blood tests in order to check for adverse effects. 

Before you take Abiraterone, tell your healthcare provider if you: have heart problems, have liver problems, have a history of adrenal and or pituitary problems, have any other medical conditions.

plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed,  It is not known if this drug passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should determine if you will consume abiraterone or breastfeed. You should not do both.

Contraindication: Abiraterone may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. This drug is contraindicated in females who are or may become pregnant. If this drug is used while on pregnancy, or if the patient becomes pregnant while consuming this drug, the patient should be apprised of the probable hazards to the fetus.

Overdose: There have been no reports of overdose of abiraterone during clinical studies. There is no specific antidote. In an event of drug overdose, interrupt abiraterone acetate, undertake general supportive scales, including the monitoring of cardiac failure, arrhythmias and assess liver function.

Storage and Handling: Store at 20 °C-25°C (68°F to 77°F); excursions permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F-86°F). Based on its mechanism of action, this drug may harm a developing fetus. Therefore, females who are pregnant or having an intention to become pregnant should not tackle abiraterone without protection, such as gloves.
